Drama at Capital Baptist Home School Co-op

Capital Baptist Home School Co-op has offered a structured program of classes for home schoolers in grades pre-school through 12 since 1992.  In 1998 the Co-op began offering drama classes and the program has grown immensely since then.  Drama Night originated to give students an opportunity to perform their year's class work for family and friends.  In 2005 a Saturday evening public performance was added and an afternoon matinee was added in 2008.  2009's program included almost 150 young thespians in 8 productions ranging from 5 to 75 minutes long

Drama classes start at the 1st grade level with students learning very simple pieces from literature or folk tales.  Each successive grade challenges the students with more complex scripts and exercises to gain confidence in performance art and communication skills.  At the middle to high-school level students can study a modern comedy or a 1 hour 15 minute version of a Shakespearean text in his original language.

The ongoing vision of the program is to give home schooled students the opportunity to develop discipline, creativity, and virtue, not to mention to have fun in doing so!  A deep appreciation of theatre arts is encouraged by exposing students to high-quality production values and to plays with themes that leave both audience and actor with something to laugh at as well as think about.
